Bamboo is a folder based synchronizer or backup. That is, it works with folders and files, which is very different from archive based backups, image backups, near-continuous backups, etc. We've been given the Professional version, but Haxar is down as I write this so I don't know what the difference is from the free version. Also, the Help is online, so that's also down. English isn't Haxar's native language, and the translations need to be improved. Component-based installation, but it's not using the Microsoft installer. A number of components are registered but don't appear to conflict with anything, at least not on my PC. Installs a context-menu shell extension, starts with Windows, uses the Windows Task Scheduler.

What sets Bamboo apart from many other folder/file based synchronizers is the number of options and degree of control. For this type of folder/file synchronizer/backup, I think Bamboo is pretty good. Supports alternate data streams, which almost no other similar utilities do. I do have concerns as to whether average users will find it confusing. As I said, the online Help is down as I write this, but for some options a description is displayed on a pane on the right. Bamboo allows groups of folder pairs to be collected into "Batches". This lets you schedule or execute a "batch" of folder pairs. Bamboo can also place links on the desktop for manual execution of pairs/batches. There's quite a bit of control of how execution is handled, and you can override the defined behavior.

You have actions, filters, options, alerts, can log onto networks, can run commands after sync/backup, shutdown, etc. So I think that Bamboo is very flexible for what it does and appears to be well implemented, but again I have concerns that some people may be confused by what all it can do, although many settings are under "advanced options".

Microsoft SyncToy 2.1 is the only folder-pair synchronizer which can handle renames, but it doesn't have anywhere near the number of options of Bamboo and doesn't support alternate data streams.

We are the developer of Bamboo File Sync and Backup. Firstly, thank you for all the comments from you all. It is exactly these kind of comments that keep us motivated.

Now regarding the website. GOTD caught us by surprise by giving us such a boost in traffic (a hundred times at least!) that our local hosting service provider in Asia simply gave in. While this is a happy problem to us, it has caused you all so much trouble checking our website.

Luckily, we have already subscribed a hosting service in North America just a week before due to our expansion. Now I guess it is just pushing us to move faster than we planned. A lot faster. In the past few hours, we worked our brains out to setup a mirror site up to the new data center. Although we may not be able to completely switch over to the new site within these few GOTD hours, we now provide you the following link to our temporary mirror site, hoping that this will improve the situation as much as we can.

Thank you and hope you enjoy our software.

I've been using Vice Versa Pro for over 10 years, but have to say that I like this.

Installed and registered perfectly on Windows 7 64 bit, and after running a couple of tests was impressed how simple it all was, and appreciate the facility for 'Batches'.

Many backup programs make images which are not quite so quick to restore the odd file, where this - using the sync mode - makes a perfect copy of all the files, tree structure etc.

A good program - certainly for new users who perhaps didn't come from a DOS background and just want the job done by clicking a button not bothering to understand how.

#7, Chris Gordon, I don't know what to make of your comments. I tested Bamboo on a 289 GB drive with a huge number of files and folders, some huge files, etc., backing up to an empty folder on another drive. I was very impressed with how it functions, it has very extensive realtime, interactive, and text logs, you can tell what it's doing during operation and after the fact. I didn't actually want to move 289 GB of data so I stopped the transfer after a few hundred MB (it builds a complete list of everything that it's going to move, skipped due to errors or filters, etc., before it transfers anything, so it completely scanned the source and destination). I tested backing up the same 289 GB to a duplicate filled 289 GB drive each containing about 670,000 files and over 52,000 folders and no problems (nothing moved, complete logs of everything checked). I also checked memory utilization while running, no problems. I'm running on Win7x64, but I don't see where that matters, and memory utilization is far too low to be affected by available RAM.

I tested this out on an existing backup of all the files on my E:\ drive to an external drive and folder "X:\E Drive". I came back after a shower and it had completed. It had a message like free version limits exceeded. There was no information about what was tranfered at all. I had set it to backup with ignore and delete options. Then I ran my regular backup program which is Allway Synch Pro. Since it was a week or so since my last backup some files had changed, moved, been deleted etc. Allway Synch showed all the activity it performed as per usual. The thing is there should not have been any activity if Bamboo File Synch actually worked in the first place. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone free or not. Used on Windows 7 32bit. I don't believe it even works. Possibly something to do with the exceeding free version usage message, even though it said registered as Pro version through GAOTD. Data to backup was 254Gb so YMMV depending on what you ask of it. It may be fine for small jobs like Flash drive synching etc. But for the big stuff I don't think it's as Pro as it wishes it was.
