This is a must as it includes 1avcapture which is a great screen capture utility that enables you to re-record videos or streams especialy DRM protected ones. An alternative for this is the free camstudio which is a bit out of date and less efficient with size/quality of finished recording

1AVCenter looks to be a very interesting pack to check out, though like it's competition it'll take quite a while to get everything sorted out. In a nutshell, 1AVCenter & similar [there are quite a few, including even the popular player, VLAN] takes your media input & makes it available across a network. Generally you might share audio &/or video with PCs/laptops connected to your home network, or around the world via the web. Many of these apps include access from your cell for when you're away from your PC & bored. Some are tailored for sharing your media with a PS3 or Xbox. And some [like Orb] host the web page/service so you don't have to open up your PC/laptop to the web.

This is not simply sharing media files, but providing a stream basically the same way sites like Hulu do, which the receiving hardware plays. If you stream this content via the web, all the security concerns/measures a site like Hulu takes apply to you as well -- unless you use one of the services where you stream your content to their site over a secure connection, & then it's only accessed from their site [the downside being often limited upload bandwidth]. Now sites like Hulu have BIG pipes -- they have an awful lot of bandwidth at their disposal. You don't. In order to make streaming work for you [work with the bandwidth you have available] video needs to be compressed, as well as normally re-sized -- much of the time you'll be streaming 320 X 240, which is a very far cry from HD. Re-sizing &/or compressing [re-encoding or transcoding] takes horsepower -- often as much as your PC/laptop can give.

Packages like 1AVCenter include a video converter designed to work in real time so you can stream your video. 1AVCenter also has built-in capabilities to get content in the 1st place, like video capture/recording. Using just that end of things can be tempting [it's difficult if possible to record some streams from the web otherwise], but you should IMHO weigh the advantages/disadvantages of setting your system up to stream content via a network... it can take a bit of work, & may not be possible to plug all the holes, if you want your system to be as secure as it is now, before adding this sort of network broadcasting package.

Far as alternatives go, there really are so many, & so many kinds it's difficult to give any sort of real list. There are TV Center type packs, like Vista's & 7's Media Centers, designed to be access from your TV screen, & most I think also include options for sharing & streaming over a network. There are players like VLAN that include the options in a somewhat techie, less user friendly way. There are direct competitors to today's GOTD like TVersity. And then there are packages focusing more on on the streaming aspects, like maybe the Unreal Server. Windows Media Encoder 9 has for years included streaming, & Adobe has a free, flash based setup for streaming live feeds. [Hint: if you're thinking about using video from TV tuner or capture hardware/devices, start by checking compatibility with your hardware 1st -- than can reduce the number of choices you have tremendously].

#3 Angie,

After installing is complete, close the program, reboot and then
activate. This works for me.

I installed and registered, Read the instructions and took a tutorial. I would use a program like this to do screen recordings from the browser window.
I set it up, or I tried to. The main problem with this is, The config window starts capture as soon as it displays, so you see a capture of a capture while
trying to configure what you want to capture. The preview window starts off inside the main window
and it can be detatched, but not hidden :( this and the limited hot key commands make this
a joke to try to do real time screen recording. It also is very much a cpu hog when not actively capturing. I really was hoping this was a better program.
sadly, it is not what i was hoping for. I will stick with HYPERCAM. there are many other uses fro this i am sure, but not for my tastes.
Thanks anyway GOTD! you guys are the best!
