Don't understand why people who write comments on this forum get upset (and click a minus) when someone asks a QUESTION about the software being given away. #2, Monkey man, asked a question that I, too, would have asked if I wasn't so turned off by some comments. We're not all as intelligent as Karl, and some are just plain not computer-savvy. Foolish to download something that you don't fully understand and clog up your registry. I learned this years ago by someone who was very helpful on GOTD. This signt is a blessing, in my opinion. Be nice.

Sadly you are correct, recently to ask a question is marked down, yet this site has helped so many people because of questions that were asked.

Hello gotd users, please dont mind my long post. But I have a urgent need for a filebackup software, because some documents, files very much are getting lost on my pc (windows 7 ), and some applications also crash very much. I have much assurity that there are no virus or malware to blame for this as i had kept my pc clean with norton security trial, and now with webrootsecure anywhere, with thorough regular scanning and very safe web browsing. Please dont tell me to reinstall my os too. I just a well recommended backup software to backup some of my documents, images and some files - not to cloud, but only another external hdd or another disk on my pc. (If sync feature is missing in the backup software its still ok, but if its present in free software/ low priced software then better, although i need backup only).
The only thing that matters most to me is -
1) it should be able to backup reliably files even in use (i think by microsoft vss) etc. So vss feature is absolutely impostant in it.
2) it should be able to either backup automatically at even minor changes of files, or at intervals like 4 - 8 hours. Just one more thing if its anyway possible is to keep the dates of the files to be same (i mean creation date and modification date). Ofcourse the backup archives would be having dates of backup made absolutely, but i would like creation date to be preserved (but this feature is quite hard to find in backup softwares, so if this feature is missing, its still ok)
the software if is of reasonable, discounted cost then i would pay, but great if its free (but it should have no malware, as many free have gone malware.
Please help guys. Very much need it for my crashes and some file losses (dont need full imaging solutions or expensive backup to cloud softwares, only backup to external or internal hdd) many thanks in advance.

To be honest, you're in the wrong place for answers to so extensive a query as that: a search engine would be a better place to start. You could probably do with some help, too, about what-does-what, so I'd suggest you try these links:
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/types-backup-software-what-s-difference-between-disk-imaging-file-based-backup-or-synchroniz
http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/file-backup-terminology-what-do-terms-differential-incremental-mean-and-how-will-they-help-m
and then take a look at any on this list:
http://www.freeware-guide.com/dir/util/backup.html
It'll maybe take you an hour or so to complete your own research, including downloading GOATD's present offer of today's commercial program and trying it out to see if it suits your individual needs.

AOMEI Backupper Free or AOMEI OneKey Recovery Free are the best software in this category. I used both on my windows 7 64 bits laptop. AOMEI OneKey Recovery create a factory restore partition and one key backup system for desktops and laptops. Both these Gems never let me down in any critical situation.

I don't understand the nature of Backup Programs. Isn't archiving files and burning it on CD's not enough
for this kind of job. I never found a use for Backup Programs, except for Image creation of the HDD partition
from Acronis or Paragon. Why Backup files?
Karl could answer better.

If your ever had to reinstall all your programs one-by-one you would understand the need for backup of your operating system and program files. The data files are important too------like that once-in-a-lifetime photo and that what the "cloud" is for. Hard drives and solid state drives have a habit of failing and a bad virus infection can wipe a hard drive. I use Norton Ghost, EaseUS Todo Backup and Eassos System Recovery successfully in backing up my "C" drive where Windows and the programs are stored. I have a separate on-board SSD for Data files which are also backed up to external networked hard drives (note the plural hard drives). I have been using Norto Ghost for some years but am now looking for another program as Symantec is no longer supporting Norton Ghost, hence my use also of the EaseUS and Eassos programs until I settle on one.
