I’m a little dubious about installing this software on my computer firstly because by default it wants to change my home page to it’s own web page and makes my search engine change, plus I get security warnings from two different security software’s (Mamutu and Immunet), the first saying that the software downloads data invisibly from the internet and the second warning (from Immunet) was of a W32.Trojan.9e1e, then Mamutu says the program behaves in a similar manner to a Spyware (LAN bypass backdoor). Hmmm very suspicious.

Even when I uncheck the toolbar boxes the program still tries to install a conduit toolbar to my browser. Thankfully I have a decent start-up program (Anvir Security suite) that enables me to further block such behaviour.

The developer should be ashamed at allowing such behaviour. I’m certainly not going to reinstall this software after all the warnings and attempts to install toolbars even when I’ve said I don’t want them. Disgusting behaviour

Oddly hen I installed this the last time it was given away it didn’t give any warnings.

Just because McAfee doesn't catch a virus doesn't mean there isn't a virus. (Negative evidence is no proof of anything.) McAfee has been known to miss viruses that others catch. On the same hand, all virus software have a capacity to issue false positives, since they identify viruses based on behavior and 'signatures'. Since a code signature could be equal to text or a code passage chosen to be a signature could match the end part of one library routine, whatever glue falls between and the beginning of the next routine, signatures aren't foolproof. Likewise, behaviors which are evil in a virus can be benign in many programs with no malicious intent or bad action (vide Rockmelt, which Mamuto complains about because it invisibly downloads information from the internet and apparently makes very minor updates to itself, changing its checksum; both of which fire off mamuto warnings!)

So it would be good for the makers of a GAoTD to test for response to their programs and installers from different virus detectors and be honest about what they put in their stuff, it may be that only SARC and time will tell.

Just so you know my position, I used to work for a college that was wedded to McAfee, and an industrial company which thought Symantec was the absolute. Both of them dropped their darling and moved on to other virus detection programs when the original companies changed their licensing policies, and their detectors started missing new viruses. I have no direct knowledge of whether any maker of virus detection software has gotten lazy with age and self-importance, nor can I say that the new software was significantly better at detection without false positives and missed detections...but at least their policies didn't straight-jacket their users as much as the ones they left. For a while, at least.

Which version is this give-away (current is v7.9.3) ?
I expect that this is a serverely stripped down or very old version, because the installer of the current (trial) version is much larger (maybe because it contains files that aren't required for the operation).

CONS:
No real contact information (address) on their website. The owner's WHOIS record is protected by WhoisGuard.

I will pass.

What is Conduit Engine?

Conduit sells search engines to sites that install the engine to hijack home pages. I purchased a product from Ahampoo, and rejected the option to install the Bing Ashampoo search bar, yet it was installed. The code of my hijacked home page is http://search.conduit.com/?ctid=CT2475029&SearchSource=13. Conduit evidently is in some partnership of revenue sharing of the hijacked home pages. A Web of Trust search will show many complaints from users. Conduit Engine shows up in my add/remove programs, but failed to uninstall, and the "uninstall" was preceded by some direct script code that quickly popped up and then disappeared, I assume so that the search bar cannot truly be uninstalled.

A Google search of Conduit Engine will result in complaints by users who want to uninstall the search engine, but are having problems.

This spyware 'search engine' that refers unwilling users to advertisers deserves a better answer than what is below sooner, rather than later.

Also install the Conduit Engine toolbar into Internet Explorer, even though i cleared both the checkboxes during install.

The toolbar can be disabled in IE and Cool Record Edit Pro also still works after running
%programfiles%\ConduitEngine\ConduitEngineUninstall.exe

I'm really glad i installed this into a sandbox.....
