Users need perpetual license to avoid file loss. A one year license to protect critically important files means they have an expiration date and can all be lost.

What does 1 year licence mean?
Free updates for the year or
stops working after a year

There are many similar offerings that dont expire - ever!

Seriously now, sometimes one year licenses are perfectly understandable. It's a generous trial period, and many developers do return before the year is up with another offer. For media converters and the like, if they stop working, it's no big deal to either choose to buy or move on to the next program.
But when you're talking about encryption, or backups in proprietary formats, or disaster recovery software, it's simply not worth the risk to find that when you need your data it is inaccessible. It's tricky enough to put your trust in an unproven company for that kind of software. They may or may not be there when your license expires. At least with a lifetime license you have a fighting chance to retrieve your data.

Sim, by law they do have a hidden door with master password, I know, I just came from there and had to close my business because of that. All companies, including Apple must oblige to that law.
