I did a quick search and found several file transfer programs with ease. Some have IM capabilities as well. There are actually too many to post here. I just typed the key words file transfer from PC to PC, lol Though it just occured to me that I should try Windows own network set up wizard as since mty last trial (where I got slow transfer speeds) I was on a much slower internet connection - whether that affects a LAN I'm not sure. Please excuse the slight tangent that this post seems to be going in with regards to todays re run.

here are a few for those interested only the file transfer aspct of the program:

Maileet

This is a solution for transferring files between people, regardless of the file size or if the people are behind a firewall. Maileet can transfer the file to many recipients uploading the file once. It cuts any file size into segments and uses a mail server to transfer them to the peers. Since most computers accept e-mails, regardless of the firewall configuration, the file will be received. On the receiver side, the Maileet client downloads the segments and restores them to the original. It includes queuing, pause and resume, session saving and resend requests.

Not sure if Vista is supported

Look@file:

A powerful and very user friendly file transfer program. It allows you to send and receive any file or directory with a few clicks. Major features: SSLv3 Encryption with openSSL, Auto-Compression, Transfer Resuming, Receive Tunnelling (useful when you are behind a router/firewall), Dynamic DNS Support.

Utalk Network Messenger:

A Network (LAN) Messenger with File Transfer, Reminder Service and Logs. Message Encryption with Blowfish Algorithm. Multicasting and Broadcasting Supported. Multiple File Attachments Supported. Attractive Interface and Easy to Use. Reminder Utility Added. Logs of The communication Supported.

TuFtp v1.4:

With a windows explorer like interface, TuFtp makes it very easy for you to transfer files and folders, no matter the transfer is between your local PC and a remote ftp site, or between two remote ftp sites. You do file transfer in three simple steps: select, copy, and paste. The progress window which appears during the ftp file transfer process not only gives you a constant feedback about how many files and how many bytes of the current file have been transfered so far, it also provides a place where you can cancel a lengthy operation should you have changed your mind in the middle of a long file transfer process.

Other features include: a Site Manager which allows you to store and manager your many favorite ftp site login profile info; a stuaus log view pane which displays the detailed time and status of the FTP operations; auto-save the ftp action status log into a file; auto-reconnect to the selected ftp sites when TuFtp is started; and print the TuFtp window display.

Not sure if TuFtp is PC to PC though???

SRE/Copy:

SRE|copy is a file transfer tool, for local and network transfer, with resume support. Never worry again when copying over a network! You have now the freedom to pause and resume your file transfers with just a click of a button. SRE|copy's automatically pauses on any errors that may occur. SRE|copy will not replace Windows' own copy function - making it possible to decide how you want to copy your files. SRE|copy will put itself on your drag-and-drop handler for files, directories and drives.

#3 : the free file transfer program you're looking for is called Window Explorer. All you need to do is share the transfer directories (or even disks) so they become visible on the network.
You might also look at some free Explorer-replacements that allow side-by-side display of two directories.

I was really pleased to see the double license offered today. After trying the demo versions with one full license it did what it says it does.

The kids had lots of fun sending IM's to each other and when they discovered the whiteboard, even more fun was had; though as a home user it's hardly worth buying just for that (if you wanted more licenses to cover a larger LAN. However that said I was really interested in the file transfer abilities. If you’re not sure how to do this all you need to do is click on the user section of the tool bar and select send file. A small window appears that enables you to select whatever file you wish to send. Unfortunately it doesn’t allow you to send folders, so if you want to transfer a full program you'll have to zip it up first. That said I was impressed by the file transfer rates. When I’ve previously transferred files over from one computer to another using windows it’s taken forever just to send one small file, whereas this program was relatively quick. I transferred a 73Mb zipped file which took around 30 seconds. Not bad, but I’m wondering if there is any freeware applications that anyone knows out that does the same thing?

I was offered three licenses by the developer (which I’m still considering) for $25; after writing to him following the giveaway on the 12th June. I though with today’s two licenses and the single license we got originally, I’d be able to run the three computers I have in my study, but when I have one or both computers running with the two license code that was given away today, the one that was registered with the license we received on the 12th still un registers after saying there is a license conflict. So it appears that despite today’s license having some differences in the code (several characters are different including the last three numbers), it wont allow the first license to work. (or so it seems to me; has anyone else had this problem)?

I’ve always transferred files between my computers using a memory stick or external hard drive and prior to those via DVD or CD, so apart from experimenting with the idea of using the LAN a few years ago, I’ve never bothered to try direct transfers before. It’s definitely easier to do, so I want to continue using that method so I’m going to see if I can find a freeware program that enables easy transfer of files and if possible folders. If I can find one I think this program will be redundant on my computers. (Any ideas????) Thanks in advance. 

If not I’ll end up buying the three licenses offered to me (I wonder if those will invalidate the two license key I have now, lol)

Wow, ok, I passed on the first issuing of this program after reading the other reviews and finding that it could only be installed on one pc (therefore negating any true reviews of this programs intent and purpose).

For today's download of this program I have downloaded it and installed it on the 2 pc's allowed (both using Windows XP Home) and installed easily and flawlessly.

The option to add personal information is a nice touch and a picture or avitar option also makes it easy to identify that you have reached the correct individual.

The whiteboard works great and in real-time (you can actually see what a person is drawing as it's being drawn).

The message board works well too.

The chat system has sounds very reminiscent of another chat/im program called ICQ. The typing sounds as you type is a great feature (at least for me as it helps me to know I'm actually typing something, though it would be nice if one of these programs could include a real time spell checker too lol)

The event log is very useful if/when something unusual happens so you can use the info there to try solving problems that may arrive.

All in all said and done, this program is woth purchasing.
