#2 Before you start with sarcasm that matches your user name, read the links you're on about properly. This one is for VirtualBox only.
#3 Unless you've been using virtualisation in any form, I'm afraid it'll probably go right over your head, but here goes. VirtualBox, VMWare, VirtualPC and others give the ability to run a virtual machine on your computer, meaning that it is possible to run other versions of windows, linux, mac, whatever within a program on your Windows desktop.
People use it for many reasons including gaming and development, or just to test out software before installation, since it makes no changes to your system, and disappears the minute the program is shut.
It can be fun to play around with something like linux without having to set up a separate machin or dual boot.
