I tried it out on the most bulky, cumbersome pdf I have (and trust me- I have a lot), and the first thing that amazed me was how fast it was!
When I opened it in word, I also noticed a slightly less encouraging fact: a lot of the text labels, embedded images, etc. didn't quite line up, and left white spaces or overlapped.
However, I personally don't really blame the software for this, as I said, I used this particular PDF specifically to test it out.

Overall, the speed is great, and It works well enough if your PDF's aren't too complex. Also, The interface is excellent.

3.5 / 5 stars.

Hi,

Installed fine on 32bit XP Pro sp3, although activation was automatic you have to manually enter the license key to register otherwise it will not convert the full document.

I often receive multi page invoices in PDF, I have to add a mark up to each item and then issue the amended invoice to my customer. First I convert to word, copy the columns into a spreadsheet, the mark up is applied and then I export back to PDF.

I use PDF2Word and it works more or less so I thought I'd give this a go to see if it's any better. Here's some screenshots of the results.

Original PDF document.

PDFZilla conversion.

PDF2Word conversion.

PDF2Word retains the table structure whilst PDFZilla unfortunately make a complete mess of the table and columns. The one I use costs $10 more than todays offering but in my opinion does a far better job.

PDFZilla was given out as v1.0 back in January. Today's version is v1.2. I couldn't find an exact change log as of yet but I wrote a review on v1.0 back in January which you can read by clicking here if you wish. The review includes examples of files converted using PDFZilla.

Installed and ran fine on Vista x64.

The text conversion is pretty good, but the word conversion looks unusable on the three or four different files I have tried. Paragraphs of text are split into multiple text boxes some over lapping (using Word 2007). Images are shown upside down on one conversion and the font is very odd. The problem with the text box solution is although it should allow the retention of formatting, in theory, in practice it makes the document un-editable which was probably why you converted it to word in the first place.

This is a kind of program that I've always thought it would be nice to have, so of course I was excited to see it on here. Installed and activated fine on XP SP3, although it tried to install in C: instead of in Program Files for some reason, which is annoying.

As a test, I tried converting a PDF of a somewhat complicated page from my school's newspaper into all the different possible formats. Here are the results:

*TXT: gibberish
*JPG, BMP, PNG: worked fine
*GIF: looked okay, except it was in grayscale
*TIF: worked fine, except wouldn't open in Windows Picture & Fax Viewer (opened in other programs)
*SWF: worked fine
*DOC, RTF: Awful---instead of adjusting the size of the page in Word, the program tried to cram the original page, which was roughly 12" wide by 22" long, into a landscape orientation letter-size page (11" x 8.5"). Also, none of the background colors showed up, each line of each column of text on the page was in a separate text box, and none of the text came up in the right font. (Note: I'm using Word 2003, so that might be the cause of some problems---but don't count on it.)

I also tried converting a very simple Word document to a PDF, and then converting it back to a Word document with PDFZilla. The program failed yet again: the text came out in the wrong font, and each line of text was in its own text box---that is not exactly what I'd call usable!

*HTML: Slightly less terrible than the conversion to DOC/RTF...that is, after you go in and manually change every single reference to another file (images, other pages, etc) to the correct location. AGH! When the program converts a PDF file to HTML, it creates a folder for the webpage's files, which include some HTML files and a file for each image in the PDF. The main HTML file has two frames: one for an index and one for the page of the PDF. That's where the problems start. Here is the code for the frames, with the around the tags replaced with [ ]:

[frame name="links" src="C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\PDFfilename\PDFfilename_ind.html" target="rechts"][frame name="rechts" src="C:\Documents and Settings\User\Desktop\PDFfilename\PDFfilename1-1.html"]

I don't know a whole lot about HTML, but last I checked, if you want to link to a file that's in the same folder, you just use the file's name, not the whole path!!! All the images have the same problem, so even if you load the pages of the PDF individually all the image links are broken. As for text formatting, the program didn't even try to do anything except making things roughly the right size, and making almost all the text bold (even though it wasn't in the original). However, in another file I tried, the program did format the text to be white...but did absolutely nothing to recreate the black background!

Other misc. comments:
*Export progress bar doesn't accurately show progress
*Sends output files to C:\output by default

I might keep this program in case I ever want to make images from PDFs, but overall I give it thumbs down.
