Hi All!
Before the review, can I say the GAOTD are awesome and have contributed software that has helped many people for free and exposed them to many pieces of software that they would have never seen and have grown to love. Thank you!
Now to today’s offering. Today’s software is a great idea and many free programs do the same thing or similar... but to mention the free software would be inappropriate as this forum is to give feedback on the offering. That being said, the idea is one that most of us would use as something special and not very often (unless you made a hobby or living out of it), but it would be great to have in your bag of tricks.
Downloading this, you need Adobe AIR & Flash Player 9.0.115 on your PC. If you don’t have these, the software will automatically download and install it for you whether you like it or not so it can run. It takes you through a long winded process to get some details from you.... such as login details... password etc... And requires you to enter your email address to get the code even though it pops up on the screen anyway after you have given your details. This is quite a long process, but it seems that with my install that it still doesn’t register and stays in demo mode which puts a great big watermark over you templates and photos anyway. After about 30 mins of trying, nothing that I could see makes the watermark disappear, rendering your creation useless. I am running XP so you would hope this wouldn’t be a problem for compatibility issues as seen with later version such as Windows 7.
My biggest question is... Software companies that use the great service, that GAOTD and are willing to give away their software, to promote the company and gain feedback. Why are they expecting people that try the software to jump through hoops to get it? Wouldn’t it be better to make the process seamless, quick and user friendly? Allowing us to use the software immediately would allow great feedback, word of mouth and recommendations to use and/or purchase other software in their catalogue. Instead, we are left with a process that takes too long, doesn’t register and constantly uses the internet to ‘call home’ for little reason. Hope this helps and gives a ‘heads up’.
Upon installation I saw this message:
"Installed 1.1.0.5790
Update: 2.0.2.12610"
(click update, unsure of update size, was fairly quick)
Flash Player 10 download:
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
(required me to install Adobe DLM for Firefox)
After running setup.exe:
"Notes:
- Photo Frame Show is an Adobe AIR application, so you need to be online and allow this installer to access the internet.
- The Adobe AIR runtime & Flash Player 9.0.115 or above are required.
(will be installed automatically if missing)"
Message in flash box:
Installing this application requires Adobe AIR, which will also be downloaded and installed, Press yes to continue
(Kind of odd as I had just installed Adobe AIR prior to installing this program)
Received "Riskware" message from Defender Pro
(Hidden Install airinstaller2x0.exe, normal for these type of installs, added to trusted zone)
It then has to download the frames from the Online Frame Gallery
You have to create an account at the Frameshow.com site
(throwaway email was allowed, I hate spam)
Message "Please login to your frameshow.com account in order to use your liscensed frames without watermark"
After trying to login I got this message:
Error: #214 Invalid username or password!
I used my name first and last with a space in it, apparently that's not allowed, I know I used the
correct name and password
(I WAS logged in according to the details on the firefox page, but NOT logged in according to the program)
Could not edit my settings to change my username
Could not login to the program so an annoying watermark was on the test photos/frames I tried.
At this point I gave up
If you decide to go through this yourself make sure you don't use a space in your username when you sign up
Frames looked decent, installation/activation etc. was too much of a hassle and didn't work for me in the end
(I see from #2 I'm not the only one that couldn't log in to the program so it may not even be a username problem)
Installed fine on W7. Registered online for pro-account.
Problems begin when trying to login to the application. It refuses to identify my info as being valid - even tho I can still login to the pro-account on their website.
Hopefully there will be a fix to this. Right now it's stuck in demo mode. I won't give it a rating until I find out if it will let me login or not.
Hello everybody,
we are aware of the problem and have already contacted the Developer. As soon as we get any information this message will be updated.
UPDATE: according to the developer the problem is solved and http://www.frameshow.com is working as well as application on-line use. So please go on with activation.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Regards,
GOTD team
All went well until after I entered my pro account details - then it froze - now I can't login AND the code could only be used once.... seems like I have a dud piece of software lol
