Installed on Win 8.1 64 Bit System without problems.
I scan and OCR a lot of texts, so I have some knowledge.
A first simple conversion of a german text, an old cookbook from 1920.
1) This software :
1 Page - Time 3:10 min Result :
IV o ,. w i rd nu n D r. Oetker's Hackpulver ,q)lHaekin‘. a n- Hew t'I,,I,‘[ "" Dur u|S kg Melli rechnet man ein PackcLen
Dr. O,Iker`s Hackpulver,,Baekin".
2) Adobe Acrobat Pro 11:
1 Page - Time 0:07 min (7 sec!) Result :
Wie wird nun Dr. Oetker's Backpulver "ßack.in" an~
cwendel? Auf ' /• kg Mehl reebnet man ein Pickehen
Or. Oe-cker'll Bukpulver Backin..
-------------
The simple text recognition is much better and faster 3 Min to 7 sec...
For me it's useless, because I cannot switch the recognition language from english to german, french or whatsoever. But the above text does not depend on the correct recognition language, because there are very few "Umlaute".
The very short help file gives no hint, how to change the recognition language. You can install user dictionaries, but the recognition is already done.
Verdict ...

Considered as a free software it is a good choice for the beginner. Paid ????

No time to test it today, but according to some reviews I read on other sites/forums it seems a pretty GOOD tool (oh yes, ABBYY is probably better than this GAOTD, but I'm afraid that they will never give away for FREE their expensive flagship....so forget it if you don't want to spend any money...LOL!).
Anyway, the following apps are the BEST FREE ALTERNATIVES I'm aware of....just try them and then compare their final results with this GAOTD output in order to let me/us know if it's worth downloading (according to its steep price looks like it does): OK?
Wait for your feedback!!
* VietOCR
FREE multiplatform (Windows, Linux/Unix, Mac OS X) OCR tool, which helps you scan images of handwritten or printed content, turning them into editable text using optical character recognition (OCR).
Supports PDF, TIFF, JPEG, GIF, PNG, BMP image formats and Multi-page TIFF images, which can be processed in batch by a nice drag & drop function with an integrated scanning tool and a selection box option.
Custom text replacement in POSTPROCESSING is also possible for Vietnamese and English optical character recognition (default languages), but other different languages can be of course placed into the "tessdata" folder of the program, once downloading them from Tesseract website (http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/downloads/list).
However, what makes this FREE OCR app so cool, is the fact that it monitors a WATCH FOLDER for any possible new SCANNED IMAGE FILES in order to create a new digital file to an output folder, after automatically processing them via its OCR engine.

* Tesseract-OCR
Probably the most accurate Open Source OCR engine available on the market for Windows, Linux and MAC OSX Platforms.
If used along with Leptonica Image Processing Library (http://leptonica.com) it can read a huge amount of image formats, encoding them to text in over 60 languages.

It's Christmas, I thought I'd be generous with a little present to all at GOTD and share a link. It's a link to ABBYY PRO 5 OCR where you can legally download this amazing OCR program, the daddy of them all.
The link is as follows:-
http://forum.raymond.cc/threads/abbyy-finereader-5-0-pro-for-free.35458/
There are two items you need to go to on the page, the top one that says “Link” the serial number, and the lower one which says “Download” about 160 meg.
Today's download looks worth a try, the download speed is slow as was the activation.

It worked very well on a page of inkjet printed text, with a few blocks of graphics. Retained the formatting and recognised the graphics.
However $199? I'm not sure I'd buy it at that price. Even for commercial use.
Abbyy 11 is around the $160 mark (£90) in the UK. Which is around 15% cheaper.
And ABBYY is the standard to measure against.
Would this be worth 15% more than ABBYY?
Does it do a lot more stuff that I would use?
Since even my ancient copy of ABBYY manages pretty much everything I ask of it, it's hard to think of any features I'd need to pay that much money for.

Dear users,
You can download additional dictionaries from this link:
http://smartocr.com/downloads/languages/Dictionary/
Each dictionary consists of two separate dictionary files with the same name but with different extensions. You need both files. If for example you require a German dictionary then you should download those two files:
de_DE.aff
de_DE.dic
Same goes for Spanish, Italian, Russian, etc. In order to download a file , right-click on it and select Save Link As. Remember to download both files.
You will need one more file. Let's call it a language file. It can be downloaded from this link:
http://smartocr.com/downloads/languages/OCR_Languages/
Download the language file corresponding to the language that you require. For example, if you need to OCR files in German language, you have to download the file called German.lpck. Do the same thing for all other languages.
The installation procedure is very easy and should be the same for Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. After you have downloaded all files you just need to copy them to their corresponding folders on your computer.
Please make sure that Smart OCR Pro is not running. Go to My Computer, double click on Local Disk C:, double click on a folder named Program Files(x86), look for a folder called Smart OCR Pro and double click on it. Now you need to look for two separate folders named Dictionary and OCR Languages. Copy the two dictionary files into the folder called Dictionary and then copy the language file in the folder called OCR_Languages.
Launch Smart OCR Pro, go to the Tools menu, select Settings, next go to the Recognition tab, select your preferred language from the drop down menu and click OK. Now Smart OCR Pro can recognize documents in the selected language. You can change between languages when you need to.
You can download and install all dictionaries and languages, but please keep in mind that only one language can be active at a time. You can not process a German and a French document at the same time unfortunately.
This is how you copy and paste a file: Open the location that contains the file you want to copy. Right-click the file, and then click Copy. Open the location where you want to store the copy. Right-click an empty space within the location, and then click Paste. The copy of the original file is now stored in the new location.
Some OCR languages may lack their corresponding dictionaries. Smart OCR Pro will still be able to recognize text in those languages even without the dictionary files.
Best regards,
SmartSoft Support
