> Sorry, but hasn’t there been a button in the system tray for several years, in all versions of Windows, called ‘Safely Remove Hardware’?
> Just click on that! Always been good enough for me…
> This software is usless, you can safely remove a device WITHOUT installing this software within windows explorer.
While Windows already provides a way to safely remove USB devices, it's not nearly as functional as this software.
1. When a program is still accessing files/data on the device, the windows implementation will fail with a "device cannot be stopped" message, and that's it. No further information whatsoever. USB Safely Remove shows you which programs are still blocking removal, and can even try to forcefully close the open handles. This works pretty neatly, except for the one case where the System process has a handle open - but afaik no software to date can solve this special issue.
2. In Windows XP, USB devices get powered down when getting safely removed. That's not the case anymore in Vista/7. USB Safely Remove re-implements this functionality. In my opinion it's safer for an external hard drive to get powered down neatly the way it should be, instead of cutting off its power by plugging it out.
These are the main 2 reasons for me to use this software instead of the windows functionality.
3. There are some more little features
- Blocking drive letters from being taken by external drives
- Hotkey to instantly stop devices
- Configurable autorun events (after insert, before stopping, after stopping, after removing), like a virus scan when plugging in and such
If you don't need any of this, stay with the stuff windows gives you.

IMPORTANT: You are supposed to get the license key from the website by using a special link. I ordered the key and uncheked the option for newsletters. But the the mail I received veryfied that I get the newsletters - but there was no license key!
I repeated the order for a key and left the check mark this time. The program said that this was the second time I ordered - and I got a new mail from them, exactly like the first one - NO LICENSE KEY.
Developer and GOTD: Please check what is wrong.

Zentimo is more feature full of USB Safely Remove, but at the same time USB Safely Remove has simpler user interface. Check out comparison: Zentimo vs USB Safely Remove
